UNDP hosts webinar series on NCDs & development

17 Feb 2014

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is taking steps in that direction. In partnership with the FCTC Secretariat, it has just released an analysis of FCTC implementation within national planning processes and UN Development Assistance Frameworks.

Additionally, UNDP’s HIV, Health and Development Group is currently hosting the four-session Orientation Webinar Series on NCDs, which runs to May/June. The webinars are intended primarily for UNDP staff, but others are encouraged to participate.

Webinar #1

The first webinar in the series took place on 5 February, in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Eighty-one people, from every region, participated, some from the tobacco control community. Areas covered included the developmental dimensions of NCDs and their social determinants, as well as UNDP engagement on NCDs.

The webinar reiterated the need for a multisectoral and coordinated response between specialist health partners, such as WHO, and actors outside the health sector, such as UNDP. It noted that these partners should engage also with civil society and the private sector where appropriate.

Webinar #1 can be accessed here. Provided in a separate folder at this link are additional resource materials, including UNDP’s Issue Brief on Tobacco Control for Health and Development.

Webinar #2 will be held in March. Among other areas, it will provide an in-depth look at the global political context of NCDs, and review existing action. The FCTC and UNDP’s current and potential contributions to the treaty’s implementation will be featured.
