Every year the tobacco industry spends billions of dollars on marketing to promote itself and its products to the global public. This has contributed significantly to public acceptance and social normalization of tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

To counter this, effective public awareness and education activities that communicate the adverse consequences of tobacco use are needed.
