Alternative Livelihoods and Environment

Print E-mail
Tobacco is grown in over 120 countries on more than 4 million hectares of agricultural land. If this land was devoted to food production it could feed between 10 and 20 million people. Therefore, hunger and malnutrition is worse when countries use scarce, productive land for tobacco production.

Tobacco cultivation in developed countries is steadily decreasing but increasing in developing countries where the work is labour and input intensive, creates many health and environmental dangers, and doesn't provide much financial gain.

For decades the tobacco industry has spread the myth that tobacco cultivation is highly profitable. To stop this, and provide sources of income to farmers, alternatives to growing tobacco must be provided.
